What’s More Natural Than a Group of Friends Going on Holiday Together?

For most people, going away with friends is one of life’s greatest joys – exploring new places, sharing laughs, and creating lasting memories. But for adults with learning disabilities and autism, these opportunities don’t always come easily.

That’s why we created Independence Journeys – supported holidays that offer so much more than a break. They’re about confidence, connection, and learning valuable life skills in a setting that’s safe, supportive, and full of fun.

What Are Independence Journeys?

Our Independence Journeys are carefully planned trips for adults supported by the Independence Project. Whether it’s a beach break, countryside retreat, or city adventure, these holidays give our members the chance to travel with their peers, make decisions, and experience life away from home – sometimes for the very first time.

Each trip is tailored around the needs, interests, and support levels of the individuals taking part. Trained staff are always on hand, ensuring safety and comfort without taking away the freedom to grow.

Why Do They Matter So Much?

🧳 They Promote True Independence

From packing a suitcase and choosing meals, to navigating new environments and managing spending money – every moment of an Independence Journey is a step toward self-reliance. These aren’t just holidays; they’re immersive learning experiences that build everyday life skills in real time.

💬 They Strengthen Friendships

Being away together creates stronger bonds than any classroom or day session ever could. Our members support each other, laugh together, and often return with friendships that last far beyond the trip. For many, it’s the first time they’ve had a holiday with friends their own age – and that experience is priceless.

🧠 They Expand Horizons

Trying something new is a powerful way to grow. Whether it’s visiting a landmark, joining in with a group activity, or simply being in a new place, these experiences help develop confidence, resilience, and a sense of curiosity about the world.

🧡 They Give Families a Well-Earned Break

Caring for a loved one with complex needs is a full-time role. Independence Journeys give families and carers some precious time to recharge, safe in the knowledge that their loved one is being supported by a trusted team who know them well. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.

💷 They Offer Better Value Than Traditional Respite

Residential respite services can be expensive – and often don’t provide much in the way of personal development. Independence Journeys are a more affordable alternative, offering great value for money while delivering far greater social outcomes.

These holidays are not only enriching and empowering, but also cost-effective to the public purse, helping local authorities stretch resources further while still delivering person-centred, meaningful support.

🎯 They Support Real-Life Outcomes

Each journey connects directly to the personal goals and care plans of the individuals involved. From improving budgeting skills to overcoming anxiety in new settings, the progress made on an Independence Journey often leads to longer-term positive changes in someone’s life.

Real People. Real Stories. Real Progress.

We’ve seen members come home from their first trip away glowing with pride. People who once struggled to communicate find their voice. People who feared being away from home return already asking, “When’s the next one?”

What’s Next?

Our Independence Journeys are growing. More destinations, more experiences, more memories in the making. Each trip is built around what matters to our members – giving them a say in where they go, what they do, and how they’re supported along the way.

We’re not just offering holidays – we’re opening doors.
