Just over a year ago, Michael’s life looked very different. As he describes it, life was “a little bit rough” – he didn’t have a job, he didn’t have many friends, and he rarely left the house. Living with his dad, Michael spent most days sitting at home, feeling lonely, isolated and struggling with his mental health.
When Michael first joined the Independence Project, he was nervous, quiet and apprehensive. Crowds and late nights made him anxious, but he had clear passions – cricket, movies, and music. The team knew just where to begin: a night out at the T20 cricket in Essex with a PA from Hart Support Services. With gentle encouragement and support, Michael stepped outside his comfort zone and had “the best night,” watching the game and even meeting the players. “It was such a fun night. Because of that experience, I can now stay out and enjoy myself” he says. That moment marked a huge turning point.

A Year of Transformation
Fast forward to today, and Michael’s life has been completely transformed. Thanks to the flexibility of his Individual Service Fund (ISF) and the combined support of the Independence Project, Hart Support Services, ECL and Vibrance, Michael now lives in his own supported flat – a space he loves and takes pride in keeping clean, complete with his own comforts and light-up decorations on the wall. Living independently he now feels closer to his dad and still enjoys spending time with his brothers.
With ECL’s support, Michael has not just one, but two jobs – one at the Essex County Cricket Ground and another at The Cornish Bakery. These roles have given him a sense of independence, purpose and the chance to challenge himself.
“I haven’t had many friends before, but now I have loads – too many to count!” Michael says proudly. He now enjoys an active social life, with regular days out and activities with the Independence Project two days a week. He also spends his free time going on walks, heading to the cinema, and is planning to see a live band in December – things he once only watched on screen, but now he gets out and experiences in person.
And perhaps most exciting of all, this summer Michael will head to Spain with the Independence Project for his first-ever trip abroad. “I never thought I would actually go abroad. It all seemed too complicated, but with help I’m going to do it – and I am so excited!”
The Power of Tailored Support
Michael’s journey is a powerful example of what can be achieved when organisations work together and when people are supported in the right way, at the right time. The flexibility of an Individual Service Fund has allowed the Independence Project to tailor his support package specifically to his needs, empowering him to build confidence, develop independence and experience life to the fullest.
“I never thought any of this would happen — it’s amazing, unreal! Without them, I’d probably still be sitting at my dad’s, but now I’m excited to see what the future brings.”
Michael’s story shows that with the right tools and the right team, transformation is not just possible – it’s life-changing.
