Brad’s Journey to Independence: A New Chapter Begins

For many of us, moving out of the family home is a major milestone – an exciting, emotional, and sometimes overwhelming step toward independence. For Brad, a member of the Independence Project, this journey was all of that and more. But with the right support and a lot of determination, Brad has taken a big step forward and is now happily living in his own supported accommodation.

Brad had been thinking for a while about living more independently. He knew he was ready, but like many people taking this step for the first time, he didn’t know where to start. That’s when he reached out to Andrew here at the Independence Project.

“I wanted to live on my own,” Brad said, “but I didn’t know how to do it all. There was so much to sort out, and I didn’t think I could do it by myself.”

We worked closely with Brad to make the move happen. From contacting Sanctuary Supported Living to arranging house viewings, Brad worked with the team every step of the way. It’s a process that can feel overwhelming, but with our support, Brad didn’t have to face it alone. The biggest support we provided was reassurance and encouragement. Brad has built trusting relationships with the staff at Independence Project and often reaches out for support.

“It was a lot,” Brad admitted, “I couldn’t have done it without the Independence Project.”

After searching for the right place, the perfect opportunity came up: a supported living house where one of Brad’s friends (another member of the Independence Project) already lived. It felt like the perfect fit.

Moving out of the family home is never just a physical shift—it’s an emotional one too. Brad experienced all the ups and downs that come with such a big change, but he wasn’t alone. We continued to offer emotional support, encouragement, and guidance during this transition.

“Having to do cooking, washing, ironing and money budgeting all by myself is a challenge,” Brad said. “But I’m getting used to it and learning every day. The life skills I learnt at the Independence Project have been a great help, but now I’m actually doing this on my own.”

That sense of pride and progress is what the Independence Project is all about: helping people build the confidence and skills they need to live independently, while knowing support is always within reach.

“I am happy living on my own now,” Brad shared. “And it’s nice I have someone I know living there and other residents on the same scheme as me.”

Brad’s story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when the right support meets the right moment. His journey is still ongoing, but he’s already proven that with a little help and a lot of heart, independence can be a reality.
